In this episode:

Scott and the Integral Recovery team explore the meaning of “non-dual consciousness”. Scott points out that its hard to define because of its experiential nature. But it is essentially a state of consciousness in which the sense of separation between self and other begins to break down to where there is a felt sense of oneness. While it is liberating, it also brings challenges. All the stuff you have been hiding from yourself comes to light.

Scott suggests that effective recovery – beyond just sustaining abstinence from addiction – really is about bringing those things to the surface that are driving us to compulsive behaviors. That is the way we can get to the deeper change we long for.

The 3 musketeers discuss with Scott to consider the role of non-dualism in integral recovery, from the beginnings of detox and early sobriety through to sustained longer-term recovery. Scott talks about how they use integral 1st quadrant interior focus, in early stages just to help clients understand that their addiction is a response to underlying issues. While the concept of addiction as a disease is useful in understanding the effects of addiction on the brain and for accessing the financial support for recovery from insurance companies, he prefers to see addiction as a response to trauma or other underlying issues.

At Scott’s treatment center they seek to help clients discover their own motivation for sobriety and recovery. Then they try to “light the fire” that is already in people, that can motivate them to see recovery as working for greater states of peace and transformation that are possible beyond merely staying sober.

Scott also points out that a lot of people need to come down into their bodies and feel their emotions in a way that isn’t overwhelming. Grieving fully in the body brings up the emotions that they have been running from through addiction. That’s what a lot of the early work is before people are even ready to get to a more non-dual experience.

Scott has a refreshing view on what recovery is beyond just abstaining from addiction to substance or behaviors. He sees recovery as harm reduction on a spectrum. Once we stop our primary addiction, most people shift to “lighter” addictions or compulsive behaviors as the need to manage or avoid the underlying difficulties persist. Recovery can then be seen as an ongoing process of working with what is revealed, as layers of compulsive behavior dissolve. This is where a non-dual approach to one’s long range recovery is especially useful. Through meditation, accessing Non-dual states of consciousness gives us a natural means of “losing ourselves” in the sense of oneness that we were seeking with drugs and other addictions. In Non-dual consciousness we “unhook” from the shame and the limiting beliefs of who we are.

Due to financial constraints and misunderstandings about addiction and recovery over the long haul, our medical and insurance systems do not look much beyond the typical 30, 60, 90 days of early sobriety. Scott takes the long view, and in this interview, he speaks about a different vision of what recovery can be; a life-long pursuit of awakening and transformation.

This is especially pertinent for those of us who’ve sustained sobriety and are still struggling with underlying issues, or have not yet achieved peace with ourselves or a sense of engaging in our life purpose. Scott inspires by pointing towards working on the underlying drivers, unhook from stigma and shame, cultivating the inner support and body grounding required to work through trauma, and realize what our deepest beliefs are that keep us stuck. By doing this work we have a greater likelihood of tapping into our truest self and finding the satisfaction that comes from developing our gifts for the world.

In this podcast we also get to hear Scott’s story, what preceded his starting a recovery treatment center, employing his unique approach to recovery. What a moving story it is! Listen to the podcast to hear Scott share his personal journey through the hard stuff of addiction, to what was underneath it, to his Awakening through non-dual consciousness. Scott shows, through living it, that there IS a way through and he is now sharing his wisdom and skills to help others.
